There’s a perennial difficulty with noni fruit. It’s really difficult to preserve and ship, because the fruit starts to break down and ferment as soon as it’s picked. Juicing and fermenting the fruit to create a stable product is a common solution to this problem—but it causes as many issues as it solves.
Problems with Noni Juice
- Reduced nutritional levels due to removal of pulp
- Fermentation and pasteurization kills beneficial enzymes and other compounds
- Diluted with sugar and other fruit juices
At Hawaiian Organic Noni, our mission is to educate people about a much more healthful, nutritious alternative to noni juice: slow-dehydrated Noni Fruit Leather. Noni Fruit Leather is a raw food, because we heat it at such a low temperature that all the beneficial compounds in the raw fruit stay intact.
We’ve found that removing the water from pure, raw noni pulp stops the fermentation process, creating an even more stable, safe, and nutritious product than noni juice, which we can ship all over the world.
1. Increased Potency
In noni fruit, the potency is in the pulp. Noni juice contains no pulp, only juice, so much of that potency is lost. Fermentation, processing, and dilution further strips the potency away from noni juice, resulting in a product with only a fraction of the healing power.
In particular, beneficial enzymes, antioxidants, and other micronutrients are damaged in the process of turning noni fruit into fermented noni juice. To get the same benefits as from raw noni, you have to consume a lot more noni juice—and it doesn’t taste very good!
Our Noni Fruit Leather has all the potency of raw noni fruit, in a more compact form. In fact, it only takes 2 oz. of our Noni Fruit Leather to equal drinking fourteen 32 oz. bottles of Noni juice. When measuring anti-oxidants, Independent research has shown that at 100 grams, Noni Juice has 1506 units of anti-oxidants and our Noni Fruit Leather has 340,000.
2. Higher Nutrient Content
Your body needs a wide variety of nutrients to promote and maintain good health. Many of the nutrients we need are very delicate, and are easily altered or damaged by heat. Some foods are easier to digest and very nutritious when cooked—noni is not one of them!
In general, raw foods have a higher nutritional content. Research has identified over 165 beneficial compounds in the raw pulp of noni fruit, most of which are destroyed by heat, fermentation and processing. To view a list of the 165+ compounds found in the pulp of Noni, click here.
Even the act of juicing noni decreases the nutritional value. In general, fruit and vegetable juices are higher in sugar and lower in fiber and other nutrients than the raw foods they were made from. When it comes to fruits and vegetables, the actual flesh of the fruit is a big part of the nutritional package. Our fruit leather is made of noni pulp—we never strain away the good stuff!
Scientifically, when you go from the whole raw apple to apple juice you lose over 50% of the nutritional valve found in the whole apple.
3. No Pasteurization
Noni juice is more stable than fresh, raw noni fruit right from the tree, but the fermentation doesn’t make it 100% safe. In most cases, noni juice is pasteurized to kill bacteria that might be harmful to drinkers. But pasteurized juice is not raw!
Pasteurization uses very intense heat that kills off digestive enzymes and antioxidants in raw fruit. This is true for all juices, including apple, orange, pomegranate, and especially noni! The variety of heat-sensitive beneficial compounds in noni fruit provide huge benefits to the human body, but they’re wiped out when noni juice is pasteurized.
Luckily, Noni Fruit Leather requires no pasteurization at all. We slowly dehydrate our noni fruit at a temperature that’s safe for the enzymes, antioxidants, and other beneficial compounds in raw noni pulp. By using this method, we create a safe, raw product, for optimal nutritional value.
4. Longer Shelf Life
Despite the fermentation and pasteurization, noni juice has a limited shelf life. Exactly how long the juice lasts depends a lot on the specific product, but you definitely don’t want to drink expired noni juice. Plus, once a bottle of noni juice is opened, it has to be refrigerated, and it expires more quickly.
Our noni products have a two years shelf life unrefrigerated. And after two years, they’re still safe—they simply go darker in color with age due to exposure to light.. Noni Fruit Leather is an amazingly stable product, which is why we’re able to ship it all over the world.
One big perk for you: when we have a great sale on noni, (sign up for our newsletter to get information about our sales each month!) you can stock up without worrying about your noni going bad. You can also take advantage of our generous quantity discounts for large orders.
5. Easy to Apply Topically
Ethnobotanists tell us that applying noni topically was the original use by ancient Polynesians. They used it to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and fight infection by placing the raw fruit on their skin.
Noni juice is difficult to apply topically. It’s often added in tiny amounts to skincare products, but it’s not potent enough to give you the full range of benefits.
With raw Noni Fruit Leather, making topical applications is easy. Once we’ve slow-dehydrated the noni pulp to make fruit leather, we have a very versatile product that can take the form of Noni Fruit Leather, Noni Lotion, Noni BioBandage, and even Noni Pet Solutions.
To make these topical solutions, we simply puree the fruit leather with water. Then we add organic lavender to the lotions, menthol and camphor to our IcyHeat formulas, and aloe to our BioBandage.
These topical products are full-potency, unpasteurized, and have a l2 year shelf life, because they’re made with the same slow-dehydrated Noni Fruit Leather.
Slow-dehydrating noni takes a long time—over 60 hours at less than 115 degrees. But we’ve seen firsthand that the results are worth it. Switch out your noni juice for raw Noni Fruit Leather. You’ll be amazed at the increased potency you get when you go raw!
