School’s back in season, and with that comes an increased risk of head lice. Commercial lice cures are full of harsh chemicals, and there are increasing numbers of lice who are resistant to those chemicals. They’re potentially dangerous, and they might not even work!
Luckily, natural remedies can remove lice without chemicals, and they’re often more thorough and reliable. In particular, a Polynesian superfood called noni repels lice completely.
Noni is a great bet for easy, organic lice removal. Here’s how it works to naturally repel lice away from the head without harsh chemicals.
Lice: Know the Enemy
Head lice are tiny, wingless parasites that live among human hairs on the scalp. They feed on tiny amounts of blood as they live and breed. Lice aren’t dangerous, and they don’t spread disease, but they are annoying. Scratching at the scalp can also lead to irritation and infection.
Don’t ignore lice if someone in your family may have contracted them. They spread quickly, especially in a school setting. It can take months of vigilance to be fully clear of lice.
Tricks to Find Lice
You can check for lice by looking at the roots of the hair for nits, which are lice eggs. Nits look like tiny bits of dandruff adhered to the hair follicle close to the scalp, but unlike dandruff, they can’t be brushed away. Only in a very heavy infestation will you see actual lice on the scalp.
Many people who have lice end up with very itchy scalps, due to a reaction with the saliva of the lice. Scratching can lead to further irritation and infection. You might even see a rash develop on the scalp. Before itching starts, the sensation can also be like things crawling or moving on the scalp.
Conventional Lice Treatments Have Two Big Problems
Why use noni when there are other conventional treatments available? It’s part values, part health-consciousness, and part common sense practically.
Chemical Lice Treatments are Toxic
Usually, when lice are discovered, you start a process of chemical eradication. The problem is, these chemical pesticides are toxic. Even though you’re administering them at a far-below-lethal dose, they can’t be great for your health, especially for kids.
You should never use more of a conventional lice product than is directed, use the same treatment too often in your life, or mix treatments. These chemicals are dangerous, and the scalp is a sensitive area. Many people prefer caution in this case.
Lice are Evolving
There’s increasing evidence to show that lice are gradually becoming resistant to the harsh chemicals we’ve developed to eradicate them. Doctors have warned for a while that this process might be underway, and we’re starting to see the effects.
Treatments don’t always work anymore. Infestations get treated more slowly. This August, in fact, treatment-resistant strains of lice were found in 25 states. This alarming trend should encourage all of us to go back to nature for our treatments whenever we can.
How to Treat Lice Naturally
You can treat lice without using any harsh chemicals at all. It takes some vigilance and patience, but to us and many of our customers, it’s worth it. You avoid the toxins of conventional treatments, and those harsh treatments were likely to fail anyway.
- Remember: to get rid of a lice infestation, you have to kill both the adult lice and the eggs they laid, which are each resistant to different attacks.
- It’s usually most effective to start by coming methodically through the hair and picking out the nits—this helps prevent re-infestation once you’ve driven away the lice.
- Olive oil, mayonnaise, and other greasy substances like hair gel can smother lice, but you must treat the hair under a shower cap overnight as lice can stop breathing for hours at a time.
- Heat can kill nits, so give hair a good blow dry after you wash the olive oil out, then do another comb-through.
- Clean linens that come into contact with the head, but don’t feel the need to sterilize your whole house—lice can’t live long without a host, so they usually don’t stray far.
Noni: Naturally Anti-Parasitic
Noni is a superfood with over 165 beneficial compounds that help the body fight off infection from bacteria, fungus, and parasites. For parasites both internal and external, including insects, worms, fungi, and microbes, noni is a powerful repellent.
It works on both pets and people. When taken by pets, it naturally prevents fleas and ticks without any of the side effects of chemical treatments. It can also remove internal worms and other parasites from pets, as well as humans.
We recommend using it liberally every step of the way as you de-louse.
In Hawaii, many tutus and kukus (grandparents) treat lice with noni. They take a ripe, white noni fruit and smash it on the head of the person with lice. Some people claim you can see the lice jumping away!
The problem is, noni is too perishable to ship the raw fruit to people who don’t live where it grows. We’ve developed an innovative low-heat drying technique that preserves the delicate beneficial compounds in the raw pulp, while making it shippable. You can even store it with no refrigeration!
We take that dried noni pulp and turn it into our Noni Lavender Lotion, which is a great topical treatment for lice. Noni works by discouraging the lice, and convincing them it’s a bad environment, rather than by killing them.
It’s 100% organic, chemical-free, and nontoxic, plus it’s made, bottled, and shipped all from our small family farm on Kauai.
How to Apply Noni Lavender Lotion
Apply the lotion to the scalp thickly. You can do an overnight treatment by covering your scalp in a very thick coating and wrapping your head in plastic wrap or covering it with a shower cap.
You can also apply a thinner coat of lotion to the scalp throughout the day (3-4x per day) and let it air dry. Doing this throughout the day keeps the lice’s environment saturated with noni, and they don’t like that at all.
Soon, your lice should start jumping ship. Keep combing out nits, and the lice populations will fade over time. Noni is an organic remedy with no side effects or toxicity. Give it a shot, and see what nature’s medicine can do!f
