Noni: Natural Relief for Shingles

By: Steve Frailey Wednesday February 1, 2017 comments Tags: shingles, itchy skin

Approximately 1 out of every 3 people in the United States will develop shingles during their lifetime. This is because shingles is caused by the varicella zoster virus which is also responsible for chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus becomes dormant ready to reactivate becoming the shingles virus.

How do I know I have shingles?

You may first notice that your skin is tingling, itching, or stinging on your face or torso. After a few days, red scaly rash appears in a stripe pattern along the nerve path called a dermatome. Then the rash erupts into clusters of small red patches which appear similar to chickenpox. The small red patches eventually develop into small blisters and typically clear up after approximately 3-4 weeks.

Symptoms of shingles are:

  • Headache
  • Red rash and blistering on the face and other parts of the body
  • Fever and chills
  • Nausea
  • Body aches
  • Swollen lymph glands
  • Pain, burning, numbness, itching or tingling
  • Sensitivity to being touch

What causes shingles?

As discussed earlier, anyone who's had chickenpox may develop shingles. The virus will lay dormant until reactivated and travels along the nerve pathways to your skin causing a breakout. Shingles is most common in older adults and people who have weak immune systems. A weakened immune system can be from stress, injury, certain medicines, autoimmune diseases, or cancer treatments such as radiation or chemotherapy.

I have shingles. What do I do now?

Good news! The majority of the time, when someone recovers from shingles they don't get it again. In the meantime, below are some suggestions to help you to a speedy recovery!

    • Cool wet compresses against the affected area
    • Colloidal oatmeal baths may also provide relief
    • Flaxseed oil  and other essential fatty acids are important for a healthy nervous system
    • Garlic has antiviral properties. Try adding garlic to your food during an outbreak to give your immune system a boost
    • Licorice contains several antiviral and immune-boosting compounds. Try drinking tea with licorice for relief
    • Oat-straw extract has also been known to calm the nervous system which is how the shingle virus travels through your body and onto your skin
    • Noni fruit also possess antioxidant properties that help to neutralize the oxygen free radicals and its effects in the body.

Research shows that the Noni fruit helps to provide relief from oxidative stress and its damage in the body and the immune system. Noni fruit is also high in vitamin C which can help control histamine levels preventing hives and allergic reactions/breakouts on the skin.

There were no roads, electricity, water or buildings but lots of Noni trees (Morinda Citrifolia) in our valley. We also developed a deep relationship with Noni that was growing all through our valley.  Today we run our Hawaiian Organic Noni farm, and share the gift of health with people throughout the world.
